Project Title: Rainwater harvesting and treatment by using local simple technologies

Summary: The target area is home to 150 families (846 people) who are former Rwandan migrants who lived in Tanzania until 2013, when they were expelled and had to leave the country. For water supply, the families rely on a borehole that is 2 km away and which does not provide water during the long dry season. During this time the families fetch water at a dam that was constructed to supply water for livestock. The intervention therefore wants to establish rainwater harvesting tanks at household level with the excess being collected at a larger tank on community level. The water will be purified using Solvatten solar water filters. To raise awareness about the negative effects of using unsafe water, the project will implement Hygiene Promotion activities within the community.
