Arua Branch
Location: Imvepi Refugee Settlement
Project title: SAWACOS – Sanitation, Waste Management and Community Services
Summary: Currently, about 69,000 South Sudanese refugees live in Imvepi settlement, one of the 5 major refugee settlements in northern Uganda. The waste management situation in the camp is inadequate. Under a previous project, URCS in cooperation with AutRC have established a Waste Management Center which is now being operationalized under the Skybird Programme. The WMC will be managed by young adults from the refugee and host communities, including young women. After the collection and safe disposal of faecal sludge is guaranteed, small business opportunities for income generation include briquette making from (dry) solid waste, piloting the use of (wet) organic waste for composting and sorting, selling and upcycling recyclable materials.
